Murph

Our Memorial Day Wod in honor of Lt. Michael Murphy was the best day at the new box thus far.  Lt. Murphy was killed June 28, 2005 after exposing himself to enemy fire and knowingly leaving his position of cover to get a clear signal in order to communicate with his headquarters. He provided his unit’s location and requested immediate support for his element and then returned to his position to continue fighting until he died from his wounds. During his military career, LT Murphy received 11 different military decorations, including: the Medal of Honor, Silver Star, Purple Heart, Commendation Medal, and Combat Action Ribbon. Since his death, a post office in his home town, a park and a guided missile destroyer, the USS Michael Murphy, have been named in his honor.

Lt. Michael Murphy, "Murph"

“But beyond his physical strength, Michael Murphy was blessed with a powerful sense of right and wrong. This sense came from devoted parents who taught him to love his neighbor — and defend those who could not defend themselves. Well, Michael took these lessons to heart. One day in school, he got into a scuffle sticking up for a student with a disability. It’s the only time his parents ever got a phone call from the principal — and they couldn’t have been prouder. Michael’s passion for helping others led him to become a caring brother, a tutor, a lifeguard, and eventually, a member of the United States Armed Forces.”

We officially aren’t open until next Saturday June 4th but this Saturday will be one I won’t forget.  The screams of , “Thank you Murph! echoed in the gym as we all pushed through this grueling WOD together.  Knowing the story behind the man we were honoring really made you never want to stop.  It made you want to push through and keep fighting just like he did until the end.

The sense of community in the gym that day was also really inspiring too.  We had a really good group of 23 people of all different fitness levels all willing to give this WOD a go. In the end, after it was all over I couldn’t have been more proud of everyone for pushing through and finishing, no one quit.  It was truly controlled chaos at it’s finest.  If this is a sign of things to come then I really can’t wait for next Saturday, it is going to be an awesome day.  So come one, come all to check out the new gym, and get some BBQ that I will personally be smoking all day the Friday before and to possibly become part of something great at Sky’s Limit CrossFit.
